4 years ago today

Four years ago today we landed for the first time in Irkutsk. It's hard to believe it has been 4 years, sometimes it feels shorter, sometimes it feels like an eternity. Three years ago this week we were buying our tickets to go and bring our girls home. Of course we all know what
happened then.
Since then we have lost one child to her family, then in October (after the roller coaster ride with the American Embassy's visit to Irkutsk) we heard from our facilitator that we should give up. In the Bratsk orphanage, the guardians are immediately finding Russian homes for any child that gets a court date. 3 French families had this happen to them in September and October. So we have stopped all adoption related activity. If things ever change in Irkutsk, we will definitely try to bring her home, but we have lost hope that this judge will ever change or loose her position.
I still think of my babies everyday and wonder if I will ever truly heal from the pain. Even grief counseling has not helped much. So many friends and family try to convince us to try again, but traveling to Irkutsk to go to court and then losing it all makes it hard to think about jumping back into the 'frying pan.' The second we meet Pixie we fell in love with her, and the next day Dimples stole our hearts. I just can't move on. The grief still over whelms me. It fells as if someone has kidnapped our children and our home and lives are just waiting for them to be found safe and alive. We have not way of getting any news of them so we don't know who has them or if they are loved and cared for as much as they deserve.
The biggest thing that brings me comfort is my 'furbabies', we adopted another dog after the news from Irkutsk- he is half dachshund, half basset hound and is a really big baby and trying to sit in my lap as I write this as he is terrified of thunder. Even though is name is Buddy (aka Budwieser) I call him the big headed BoBo-his head is huge compared to his short little body, and he's a bobo because he is just not as smart as our dachsie.

We do pray for those who still have hope and for the beautiful children of Irkutsk, that they finally have mamas and papas someday.

BABY IN MICROWAVE???!!!

OH THE HORRORS that people do to children. In the news today a man was arrested for burning his 2 month old baby in a microwave. Report says he also he put the baby in a hotel safe and the refrigerator before putting her in the microwave. Of course the mother of the child is defending this peace of crap, saying that Satan compelled her husband to microwave their daughter because the devil disapproved of Joshua's efforts to become a preacher.

"Satan saw my husband as a threat. Satan attacked him because he saw (Joshua) as a threat," and told the television station that her husband is "not the monster people are making him out to be."

"That was not my husband; my husband is a wonderful father," she said. "Satan was working through his weaknesses." The police stated that not appear to be protective of the infant.

Give me a break, not only should he be sentenced to many years in prison, but his wife should never be allowed to see this child again. But of course that will not happen in this country, especially since the baby is going to be fine. No in this country abusive parents have more rights than the child as proven over and over by how often children are placed back into homes that are abusive. This just the kind of news we need to get to our judge!

Furbaby is OK

Sugar is OK. I took her to the vet today. For an 11 year old dog she is doing great, she has a little arthritis, her weight is good. Thank you God. Since we have no children all of my maternal affection goes to her. I never knew you could feel such love for a dog. And that they can love you so much.

Mothers Day

Mothers Day. So how does one get through Mothers Day when the children she met almost three years ago are not here. When one has lost one of the children to a Russian family, and when one still has not news of the other child.
Well, I worked in our Church nursery. I didn't realize a month ago when I got the date that it would be mothers day. But it was fine, I mostly sat and rocked a crying toddler who has a little separation anxiety.
Then we went out to dinner with friends, I had one to many margaritas and cried like a blubbering idiot over some stupid conversation I was having with friend. (So sorry Bob!)
Thank Goodness Mothers Day is Over!

My Poor Furbaby

Our furbaby (our dog) Sugar came limping into the living room when I got home from church. She can not put her left back leg down. She is 11 now so I guess it should be expected. But she is my baby and I can't stand to see her like this. This is scary to me, because dachshunds can have terrible back and hip problems. They even make doggie wheelchairs. This picture is NOT our dog and is from the doggie wheelchair site K-9 Cart Company

How great is it you can get a wheelchair
for your pet. Here are a couple of more pictures:

Now tell me you didn't laugh at that picture of the chicken!

An Article froom Irkutsk Newspaper about adoptions

Here is a translation of an article printed in Irkutsk on March 27. I searched for it because of the mention on the Irkutsk board about the article and how Americans adopt to steal the childrens organs. It is very long, and at times hard to understand because of the translation. It does mention "orphans for organs". The aticle focuses on how mediators are growing rich by selling us the children. The article also includes an interview with Olga before she was fired. Here is the link to original article: http://www.vsp.ru/show_article.php?id=39255

Of trade in orphans make profit both intermediaries, and officials
Around of a problem of adoption of children living in state shelters, some years passions boil. Many conversations that the preference at adoption of the Russian children-orphans is given foreigners go. And not for their beautiful eyes, and for good compensation. Thus the kids taken out abroad are not protected from the severe reference with them reception parents. Down to murders, sale of organs for the transplantation, sexual violence.
On the other hand, there are complaints to Office of Public Prosecutor and court which ostensibly brake process of the international adoption, repair to foreigners bureaucratic obstacles.

Questions and really arises much. What order of adoption of the Russian children foreigners? Whether Really thus revelry kriminala, trade in orphans is observed? Whether the rights of the child who has been taken out abroad are protected?

Where there's smoke there's fire
As it often happens, hearings about detoprodavtsah and a unfortunate share of the Russian orphans behind ocean though and strongly exaggerated, have arisen all not on an empty place. In press it was repeatedly informed, that for last ten years only in the USA from hands of reception parents fourteen children who have been taken out from Russia were lost. It has appeared one of victims two-year-old Vick Bazhenov, lived in the Irkutsk house of the child 1 after from it, the newborn, has refused native mother. In January, 2004 healthy, quiet on the character, the child not lagging behind almost in development was taken in the family by spouses Hilt from the USA. In one and a half year the girl has died in hospital of Northern Carolina from poboev, put by its new mum. 35-years Peggi Hilt, as she said, has deduced from itself crying of the child. Detoubijtsa has received 35 years of imprisonment. Approximately during same time by 12 years of imprisonment it has been sentenced by the American court Irma Pavlis, hammered up to death of the six-years adopted son Alyoshu Gejko who has been taken out from children's home in the city of Yeysk. Clean mummy could not bear, that the sick child was wetted in bed. Honey-experts have counted on its body of 32 damages. And those internal bodies that have remained the whole after severe poboev, have been withdrawn from a body of the boy for change to the patient. To 35 years of the conclusion it is sentenced by court of district Pennsylvania and the American millionaire Matthew Mankuso who adopted five years' Masha from Russia and has transformed its life in a nightmare. It within five years forced the girl every night, starved, that it looked is more younger, and, removing it on a porno, distributed a photo on the Internet. In the USA even the law which has received popularity as 'Masha's law' - about the responsibility for creation of nurseries pornosajtov has been published.
The mountain has given birth to the mouse?
At the international adoption appeared murderers and tyrants of reception parents punishes other state. However the State Office of Public Prosecutor of Russia has undertaken these business from other end: all circumstances of adoption of the lost kids have been checked up. And this time it is not formal. However, firstly public prosecutor's check of the Irkutsk center of adoption, the regional operator of a databank about children-orphans, has not revealed infringements of the legislation at definition Viki Bazhenovoj in the American family. Six married couples from Russia which have become interested was the girl, for the different reasons have refused to adopt it. As to spouses Hilt which has become, eventually, by its parents they in time sent reports and the photos testifying to how well is was sirotke behind ocean to Irkutsk.
Later however it was explained that with the adoption of two last victims of American philoprogenitiveness, vetch and the Ales, was shown the intermediary activity, forbidden Russian legislation. The discussion dealt with the illegal enterprise. In the essence - trade by children.

When materials for several years on the international adoption of orphans in Irkutsk were thoroughly studied, that checks rushed into the eyes too frequently flickered a surname of mediator - Elenas Novikovoj.

It represented interests of the foreigners in court, wishing to take in family detdomovtsev from Siberia, since 1998. First it is simple as the translator, and from 2002 - as the employee of foreign agencies on adoption. When one of them, Adoption Resource Center, Inc.., has been deprived by the Russian authorities of accreditation, Elena Novikova has concluded the similar contract with representation of the USA Crossroads Adoption Services .

Vicka Bazhenov has died in the USA from poboev the foster mother in July, 2005. And in August of the Municipal Department of Internal Affairs of Irkutsk area has excited concerning Elena Novikovoj the criminal case subsequently transferred in manufacture of investigatory management of Office of Public Prosecutor. One more figurant in business about intermediary activity on adoption of the Russian children-orphans by foreigners became Elena Novikovoj's roommate - ski trainer Jury Vasilev.
The investigatory group of Office of Public Prosecutor of the area, headed by the inspector on especially important issues Elena Lipunovoj, has done huge work. The criminal case ended by manufacture has made 37 volumes, and 6 of them - the bill of particulars. During investigation about legal aid inquiries have been sent to the USA and to France, is interrogated more than 200 witnesses, 20 judicial examinations (chemically- criminological, pocherkovedcheskikh, fonoskopicheskikh and computer- technical), are produced 23 searches and grooves, are looked around three thousand documents and objects. Investigation last one and a half year and was on the control of the State Office of Public Prosecutor of Russia.

As a result Elena Novikova has been released from criminal prosecution on amnesty, and Jury Vasilev a verdict of world court on December, 27th the last year has received punishment in the form of the penalty in five thousand roubles.

Actions of illegal and selfish intermediaries at adoption of the Russian orphans by foreigners have fallen under the sanction of item 137 ch. 1 UK the Russian Federation -
Infringement of inviolability of a private life that is a crime of small weight.

However punishment of the criminals who have got off in general by an easy fright owing to notorious "holes" in the Russian criminal law, was not the main result of titanic work of investigatory group. Investigation had much more important purpose: it was required to open the reasons which have led to tragedies of the adopted orphans, to reveal the conditions generating a shameful practice of trade by made destitute children.

The worst fears have proved to be true: of trade in orphans make profit not only private persons - so-called intermediaries like Novikovoj and Vasileva. The priority of foreigners at adoption has appeared is favourable also to officials of bodies of trusteeship, formation and public health services.

Currency in pampers
Elena Novikova having experience of participation in processes on the international adoption, perfectly knew requirements to kids of candidates in reception parents. Real chances to get and to leave for family abroad children of 2-4 years, without heavy diseases have first of all, backlog in which development gives in to correction. They with Vasilevym also selected such babies for the clients. Their personal databank about orphans included the information on health, intellectual and physical development, conditions of a life and education, and also a photo and videoshooting. Criminals received these confidential informations in the center of adoption to which the state assigns a duty to protect interests and the rights of children who have remained without care of parents. The chief of a department of ìåäèêî-social support of the center Olga Savinov, had a kind feeling to a couple detoprodavtsev, allowed them to do copies from documents, questionnaires, the information stored private affairs. Having learned, in what children's home there live more developed and healthy kids, businessmen sent there - sometimes already under a kind of workers of the center of adoption: to make shootings, to collect the full information on children which can be sold favourably abroad. Spouses "were constantly grazed" in Irkutsk houses of the child 1, 2 and 3, shelehovskom children's home " Streamlet ", in houses of the child of Slyudyanka and Bratsk.

Trade in small orphans has appeared profitable business. Data on them missed at the price of 1500 euros for the future son or a daughter, correspondence selection of two brothers or sisters cost already 2500 euros. Service was complex. Novikova with Vasilevym gave arrived on appointment to children to foreigners at the same time and services of the translator and the driver - such "care" cost to clients 150 euros a day.

What official without "recoil"!
Consequence had been interrogated tens officials, heads and head physicians of orphaned establishments, experts on social work which ostensibly before excitation of criminal case did not know legal certificates about adoption. Though this legislative base operates any more one year, officials, in whose hands there is a decision of nurseries sudeb, did not read, it appears, the Family code of the Russian Federation, had no concept about powers of representatives of foreign agencies on adoption, did not know that the information on children entrusted to their cares is confidential.

How allocated by authority above small orphans adults executed the requirement of the law « to take exhaustive measures for the device of children in families of the Russian citizens »? Novikova and Vasilev could send all over again photos of children with good data to foreign clients, and then when those will choose to themselves dochek and little sons, the same pictures were placed in the newspaper "Business-section". The publication of photos of the kids already chosen for abroad, served in court as the proof, that officials ostensibly honesty tried to attach orphans in the Russian families, but anything at them from this has not left.

How many there is an assistance in such affairs of officials of state institutions, the assistant to the general public prosecutor of the Russian Federation Sergey Fridinsky has estimated after the country of check lead by scales. It has named the sum from 400 up to 9000 dollars.

And here the price of exclusive position of foreign adoptive fathers in the Irkutsk market of orphans. Bodies of consequence have withdrawn at Novikovoj and Vasileva the correspondence containing data that for each adopted child from the foreigner the charitable help (so-called donations) at a rate of not less thousand euro without fail was raised. However only the part of this sum acted in the children's home, the given shelter to the orphan, and other currency through the head of the center of ìpsychological-social support Olga Savinov left in central administrative board of the general and vocational training of area. (and it that houses of the child are generally establishments of public health services.)

"The situation which has developed in Irkutsk area when children adopted not Russian, but foreign citizens, arranged officials and the center of adoption, and central administrative board of the general and vocational training. The revealed infringements of the law not only promoted fulfilment of crimes, they still and discredit enforcement authorities "- to such conclusion the Office of Public Prosecutor which has directed representations to Minister of Education and a science of the Russian Federation A.Fursenko and the governor of Irkutsk area of A.Tishaninu has come.

The assistant to the public prosecutor of area, the senior adviser of justice Alla Nikonova who has signed these representations, has made the offer: " To solve the problem on conformity of a post of the head of a department of socially-legal support of the center of adoption of Olga Savinovoj".

The question is solved, probably, in favour of Savinovoj through which hands flowed in the necessary pockets of "donation" from happy fathers because of a cordon. It and today as in what happened, participates in processes of regional court on foreign adoption - all in the same quality of the defender of interests of orphans. Whether it is necessary after that to wait for changes in destiny of the made destitute children?

The court asks intermediaries to not worry
But what measures were accepted by high ranks of executive authority to provide besplatnost adoptions and to forbid intermediary activity, destiny of the concrete kids, lost parental care, will solve court. Since September, 2005, that is already after tragedy Viki Bazhenovoj, all business on the international adoption in Irkutsk regional court is considered by Olga STEPANOVA.

- Whether many children get now on education in families of foreigners?
- In 2005 it is considered such 49 affairs. Considering congestion of children's homes of area, it, certainly, is not a lot of. In the past to year it is accepted only six decisions on adoption by foreigners. Manufacture on the rests should be suspended because of investigation of criminal case concerning Novikovoj and Vasileva: from children's homes necessary documents in litigation have been withdrawn. Besides after public prosecutor's check many agencies on the foreign adoption, worked without licenses or not had the accredited representations in Russia, have noticeably lowered the activity.

Per 2005 in court as representatives of interests of foreigners could come the parlourmaid or the ski instructor, it is simple people from street which profited and at all did not pay thus of taxes. The same Vasilev, for example, has declared me, that services to foreigners on selection of orphans is easier its hobby...

- Hobby which is repaid in a foreign currency... And who now renders to foreigners intermediary services?
- Basically the lawyers familiar with the requirement of the legislation. I have sent the letter to embassy of France (from this country today most of all acts applications on adoption; for reception parents from the USA now it is a little candidates) also recommended to address for the help at submission of documents in court to lawyers. After that practically there were no problems with incorrectly issued papers, it is not necessary to return materials almost. So intermediaries-fans the court asks to not worry any more.

- You, as well as Office of Public Prosecutor, consider, what it is necessary to toughen the order of adoption of orphans foreigners?
- Simply enough to execute requirements of the law. At adoption it is necessary to proceed first of all from interests of the child. The kid should grow in good family is the main thing. The court at all does not interfere with departure of children-orphans abroad if the Russian citizens have refused to adopt them.

But, considering such business, I was convinced, that foreigners, really, contrary to the law, are in more exclusive position in comparison with the Russian candidates for reception parents. With our compatriots, wishing to take the orphan from children's home, work as the center of adoption is spent very formally. Frequently for them kids do not select, appointments do not arrange, and simply show the list, for example, on hundred children. Then the citizen writes refusal of adoption with transfer of hundred surnames and at all does not specify motive of refusal. And then still such paper bring in court as the proof, that the center of adoption took measures to the device of the child in family on the native land.

Bodies of trusteeship and children's homes even concern to search of blood relatives of orphans frequently formally. During judicial consideration the healthy, normally developed children, already prepared to foreigners, are transferred under trusteeship native to the grandmother with the grandfather, the uncle with the aunt. Last case was, when mother has left the child in a maternity home, and the rural administration has given out the information on structure of family under the request otkaznitsy forged: has not mentioned the grandfather of the newborn. That, having learned about the child, has demanded immediately to return it in native family. The court has born the decision about refusal to foreign adoptive fathers.

But if the child sends abroad, it is necessary to be convinced, that it will get in family where it will love. The history Vika Bazhenovoj should not repeat. Its foster mother as it was then found out, suffered a chronic alcoholism. Means, it is necessary to check more carefully documents of candidates in adoptive fathers. To watch, that foreigners passed physical examination in that order which is established by Ministry of Health of Russia. Our requirements in this plan are more severe, than in other states. Documents can and be forged. I already had to collide with falsification of translations. Probably, unfair translators take additional profit, rendering to the clients such services.

Except for the package of documents stipulated by the law, the court has the right to request still the additional information on the future parents. And I quite often use this right, though representatives and reproach after that court with meanness. But in such affairs there can not be trifles. The candidate for adoptive fathers from the another's country - for us a cat in a bag. We have no opportunity to interrogate members of its family, neighbours, employers to receive on it exhaustive characteristic. It is necessary to make a decision, as a matter of fact, on papers. And the court has no right to a mistake.

And, certainly, cases when the adoptive father is not acquainted with problems of the kid should be excluded. It should know a condition of its physical health, mentality in details that was then surprises...

- As in case of with murder suffered enuresis Alyoshi Gejko which foster mother has accused Russia that from it have hidden illness of the boy. Whether there are chances at children with seryoznymi diseases to find family in the country where it is possible to receive necessary medical aid?
- In my practice there was a case when childless spouses-foreigners have chosen the girl which mother was sick of a syphilis in a shelter. At malyshki there was a bad sight, seryoznoe backlog of mental development - down to imbetsilnosti. The Head physician of the house of the child even was afraid to agree on udocherenie vospitannitsy foreigners. But spouses have insisted. The girl they have chosen two more years back, have found to it the approach, had time to grow fond. They have thoroughly studied the case record of the child and have solved, that it will treat and look after. Such turn in destiny of the orphan can be welcomed only.

- Foreign adoptive fathers, probably, basically rich people?
- At those who to us addresses, incomes, as a rule, rather low for the Europe: from one up to two thousand euro a month. They give information on a place of work, a çàð-payment and other incomes, living conditions. The court is guided by a living wage in the country of adoptive fathers. We deal basically with simple people, sometimes elderly, having own adult children. Having concluded second marriage, they wish to have the general child. And on the native land at them orphans practically are not present. In France, for example, in turn on adoption it is necessary to stand years.

Certainly, I was interested: why they search for children in Russia, moreover and in Siberia? It appears, consider, that in our country above a level of culture, than in Bulgaria, Romania, Vietnam where too there are chances to take on education of the child. And foreigners choose Irkutsk because trust in strong Siberian health and unpretentiousness of local residents.

- You in fact do not see the child which destiny is solved in court. Whether any mechanism of the control for semyoj adoptive fathers is stipulated?
- Reception parents give the obligation, that within three years will report about adaptation of the child in family. To supervise them, the center of adoption should correspond. It does not enter into the competence of court.

And the responsibility, really, on court is assigned huge. Representatives of foreign adoptive fathers at times complain, that the judge is unduly captious. Well, I hope, this "captiousness", and is more true - carefulness at finding-out of all circumstances, concerning than the future family of the child, can protect it from misfortune.

Is it True, Is our Government going to finally help?

YES, IT TRUE!! Our state department is getting involved. A family met with them in February and today they posted an email from them wanting more info. Interestingly it is from the same person we begged to help us last year who said the state department will not get involved in these type of situations in other countries.
Here is copy of post:
I wanted to let you know that we have been diligently working with our U.S. Embassy in Moscow to find the best ways to work on the problems with getting cases released from Irkutsk. We are in the process of working on a government to government communication on behalf of the U.S. citizens adopting from Irkutsk. It is my understanding that you are connected to various other families in your situation. I would like to ask for your assistance in providing my contact information to those U.S. citizen families that you know. They can email me at: ... with the subject heading of "Irkutsk, Russia adoption." I would appreciate it if they could include their contact info (phone, address, and best email address) and the name(s) of the children they are in the process of trying to adopt. They may also call me with this information if they would like. My phone number is:#####
At this point we are just gathering the information that will later be used in our diplomatic efforts. Right now, we just do not have a complete list of families in that region. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in getting the word out to other adoptive families that are working with the Irkutsk region.
Sincerely,

A Family Gives up because of the Judge

A post today on our Irkutsk board, a Spanish family had a terrible encounter with the judge and has given up.This is my worst fear, getting in front of this judge and her treating us like we are animals. This judge really is incapable of any feelings for the poor children and families waiting. Here is copy of the post:
Hi all,
I´ve been hesitating of telling what happened to us with this judge. I didn´t want to discourage any of the waiting families, but I think you should be very careful of how you face this situation.
I remember you that we are from Spain, and adopted a lovely girl from Irkutsk 2 years ago. We already had 2 biological children. During the process, we tried to bring home another girl who was with our daugther in the baby home. To make it shorter, at last, we could only bring the first girl, and so we decided to beguin all the papers to get the other. Two years has passed, and the situation has come worse and worse. Last month we could present our dossier to the judge, having the hope, she would apreciate we really wanted the girl as we had been waiting for 2 years for her and that she could see how happy our family was, having a new member, how she had adjusted and everything. We included legalliced pictures, and all the follow up studies we had gone through, thinking that if she was worried about the future of the adopted children, she could see a very happy child with her family. Her reaction was terribly negative when she realised we wanted another girl. She asked for a lot of more papers but her terrible words were that she couldn´t undesrtand why we wanted 4 children, and that she was sure that as our bio children were born prematurely, we obviously wanted the girls for the organs!!. After this, we have decided to give up. We have been figthing for 4 years in Irkutsk. We are terribly sad for all and we´ll never forget our little girl. But we have been aware that she will do all she can (and she can do all she wants), not to let us have this girl. It is so unfair, we cannot defend ourselves. It is terribly frustrating. She doesn´t understand and of course she doesn´t share the "family feeling", and of course doesn´t play the role of a judge. She left the impartiality on the road, and is clearly against us and doesn´t care to show her feelings.
So, we give up. For those who keep on pushing, I wish you the best luck, any of you that win, will make all of us win a little bit, but I wanted to tell you to be very careful, as bad intentioned people like this judge, can put your efforts inside out, and the price is too high.
My best wishes for all of you,

Happy Birthday -- to ME

Today is my birthday. For those of you who do not know me, I am years old. No not a mistake in my typing, I am just not going to tell you how old I am, it is too depressing. At my age I should not be waiting to bring small children home to parent, I should be waiting for grandchildren. When my grandmother was my age she had 21 grandchildren, 5 of us teenagers. But as my friend Melissa says, I look great for (this age), and besides (this age) is the new 30.
I am looking forward to this weekend, for my birthday we are going to spend the weekend in Clearwater, in a cute little hotel on the beach.

"HEROES" is back!

"HEROES" is back. Finally. For those of you that don't know us personally, my husband and I are TV addicts. We love TV. We love TIVO, which has made our TV watching less complicated and but sadly has also increased the amount of time we sit in front of the idiot box. If you scroll down to the bottom of our blog we have a MEEVEE widget that list the shows we watch.
So what does this have to do with adoption? We have discussed at length how children will change our lives; this is probably going to be one of the hardest adjustments we will have to make. Hard, but so, so worth it. I would gladly throw the TV out of our house to have those little girls here in my arms right now. I would sit through a thousand hours of Barney the purple whatever he is just for the sound of 10 seconds of a child's laughter in my home. I would give up chocolate to kiss away the tears of my babies boo-boos. Yes, TV is important to us, it helps distract and numb the mind temporarily, but it does not block the pain of waiting for our sweet Dimples.

Still feeling the loss of Pixie

I still feel so sad about losing Pixie. I think of her every day. You know how on TV or in movies they show someone remembering someone, in flashbacks. It is just like that, I get flashes of her all day. The first time they put her in my arms and she looked up at me, the first time we heard her laughing, her first kiss, how she ran to us when she saw us on our last trip, her excitement over trying on new cloths, the way she loved looking at herself on video. Oh and how she loved to eat. She was so adorable. It all runs in my head just like on TV. I never really thought it was like that, but it is. I worry so about her. I hope that she is loved.

News from Irkutsk

So she has done it! The judge has approved at least 2 adoptions, both are French families; she has also said she will start hearing 10 cases a month and rumor has it that 10 cases - 9 French and 1 Spanish - have been scheduled. Praying so so so much that an American family gets a court date soonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! Then we will know what wording the judge wants on our papers and then we can complete our dossier - AGAIN.

Another Missed Birthday

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY SWEET ANGLE, WE THINK OF YOU EVERYDAY AND PRAY YOU WILL SOON BE HOME WITH US.

Today is Dimples's 6th birthday, the third since we met her. Another milestone we have missed all because of Russian bureaucracy. We went into this to adopt 2 girls between the ages of 2 and 5; now we have only one waiting and she is 6; we have missed so much of her life. We have no way to contact her and wish her a happy birthday. We don't even know if they celebrate birthdays in the orphanage

Letter from Russia

Received a letter from Russia. Since it is in Russian we are not sure what it is about but it does have Pixie's name and birthday in it and is from the adoption center so I am fairly certain it is a letter telling us that Victoria is no longer available for adoption-8 months after the fact.

You couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?

Today in Wal-mart I overheard a mother tell her son “You couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you?” I don’t know what the child did, but my first thought was why? OK, maybe ‘well enough’ is good enough for some of us. If cars that didn’t get more than 20 miles to the gallon were good enough in the 60 and 70’s, why do better? Why build a space shuttle when the Apollo spaceships were good enough to make it to the moon? Why build computers smaller than the size of my bathroom, much less small enough to fit in the palm of my hand? The technology of the first three Star Wars movies was as amazing as it needs to get. To heck with wireless technology, who needs it anyway; and 3 black and white TV stations were good enough for us when we were growing up. But fortuantely we are a society that has been told “You can do better”, “Go for the gusto”, and so on and so on. And then to contradict ourselves with leaving well enough alone….
So what has this to do with our adoption? I hope we are parents that tell our kids “Why leave well enough alone”, be creative, GO FOR IT; unless of course you’re the person that decided Coke ‘classic’ wasn’t good enough.

Adoption Poem

Found this poem on the internet, it really touches my heart.

I hold you in my heart and touch you in my dreams.
You are here each day with me, at least that's how it seems.
But remember child, I love you so and God will keep you strong.
Now go outside and feel the breeze and let it touch your skin...
Because tonight, just as always, I blow you kisses in the wind.
I promise you, my darling, I'm doing all that I can do.
Very soon, you'll have a family for real, not just pretend.
But for tonight, just as always, I blow you kisses in the wind.
May God wrap you in His arms and hold you very tight.
And let the angels bring the kisses that I send to you each night.

Reflections of Traveling in Russia

I have been home this week, sick with bronchitis; in between sleeping and more sleeping, (and I love to sleep) I have had a lot of time to think about our trips to Russia and so I thought I would write not about the adoption in this post, but about my impressions of traveling 3 times to Russia.
When we travel I am one of those people who has to research everything, find out exactly where it is on a map, and plan out an itinerary for the whole trip. I can honestly say that traveling in Russian, no matter how much I researched or planned I was not prepared for effect the country on me.
5 years ago when we started talking about adoption we had no clue where we would go, but it turns out that Russia is a wonderful surprise in itself and I dream of going there again. I have traveled a lot since I married my military man. “Join the Navy and see the world” is not just for the sailors. Imagine having husband going overseas, so why not take advantage of this and buy yourself an airline ticket and meet him in a port. Sadly so many Navy wives don’t take advantage of this opportunity; maybe they don’t want to travel alone, or think it will cost too much, but how often can you go to Europe with you husband for the cost of one airline ticket. We took advantage of this and spent our honeymoon in France because right after we married Rich shipped out on a 6 month cruise; so I spent Christmas in Paris, Cannes, and Monte Carlo. Only about a dozen navy wives made the trek to France, and the ship had 5000 men on it.
Sorry about the little detour we just took; back to the topic of this post-traveling in Russia. Of course our plan is to do this again because the adoption is not yet complete, but even if it were, I do believe this is a country I would love to come back to, while France - well I just feel been there, done that.
Why Russia, is it because our future children are born there? Is it because the history and culture was so closed off the world for so long during the Soviets control. Or because it is a culture going through tremendous changes which makes each trip different and more interesting. I don't know, but I do know that I enjoyed every trip-the history, the culture, the sites, the wonderful people.
I love history, I even considered a history major in college; and what amazing architectural displays of Russian history to explore. To walk on the grounds of parks and buildings that were built before our own country was born, lands where Prince Yuri started building the Kremlin in 1147; to stand in front of the Tsarina's throne in the beautiful Cathedral Square Church and think that Catherine the Great could have stood in this very spot 400 years ago. The beauty of the cathedrals and churches. Many churches were destroyed during the Soviet era, but the ones that are still standing have undergone amazing restoration. The renovation of older buildings in Moscow and Irkutsk is astonishing as they are restoring by hand many of the decorative ornamentation.

About: Architecture
and Architecture in Russia

English is not language that a lot of people speak in Russia, but that didn't stop us from going out without a translator and making everyday an adventure. A lot of pantomiming can get you headed in the right direction, or not, but then we discovered places we had not read about, like the huge toy store in downtown Moscow, Detsky Mir
. 3 stories and a full city block of toys. We bought some Russian DVDs for teaching English to children, and several books for the girls as mementos of their country.
Language also made riding the subway a challenge since none of the signs had English translations, but riding the subway is far faster than getting a cab driver who understands you and then getting through all the traffic that makes New York's rush hour look like everyday is a holiday. Getting a ticket is as easy as holding up the number of fingers for how many tickets you want, but figuring out which train is which and where to get off not so easy. We had to hold the maps up and try to compare the words on the signs to the words on the maps and then hope we were on the right line and getting off at the right stop. At one stop every one got off and we sat there for couple of minutes waiting to go to the next stop. A gentleman came on and shooed us off, turns out we were at the end of the line. So we ended up in a subway station we would not have seen and it was beautiful, with an incredible mosaic on the wall of the history of building the subway.

One Year Ago Today

Another year has gone by and it is hard to believe we are still waiting. One year ago today we sat before Judge Kokino in Irkutsk for our pre-adoption meeting with prayers in our heart that the murder of Nina Hilt would not affect our completing our adoption and we could have our court date on July 28. I sure some of you wonder why we were having a pre-adoption meeting--when you adopt independently (meaning we did not use an agency) then you have to meet with the judge 10 days before court date to present you dossier - all the documents you collect to help the judge make a decision.
We were the first Americans to meet with her after Nina Hilt was killed. She looked at our papers, asking several questions -which of course we did not understand. Several times Sergie looked at us and nodded his head, but near the end she found something she was not happy about, and he shook his head no. We were told that the papers were not acceptable and she did not let us speak at all, heartbreaking since we had spent most of the previous day preparing a speech for her.
After we left we met with our facilitator and Sergie who explained to us that she said that if we came to court she would deny the adoption. So we had two choices either withdraw our papers or take a chance and if denied go before the Supreme Court. In hindsight I wish we had gone
ahead, been denied and taken our case to the Supreme Court. But who would have believed that we would still be waiting a year later. We came home and rushed through a psych eval and parenting classes and waited for her return from her august vacation. Then she retired in September. A lesson in being careful for what you pray for?
1 year ago this Thursday was the last time we saw the girls. SIGH...

Two years ago this week

Still feeling the loss of Pixie Today is one of those days when my heart is particularly heavy. Two years ago this week we traveled to Irkutsk where we met the two most adorable little girls who stole our hearts. There are many days that I think of giving up, but then I look at pictures of the one who is still waiting for us and I know we can't leave her behind.

Our Interview in the Washington Post

Another article with our interview for Washington Post after Peggy Sue Hilts conviction was announced. Here is the article.
Couples Hope Sentence Reopens Russian Adoptions
Prospective Parents Sought Tough Penalty for Mother

By Theresa Vargas
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, May 28, 2006
Up until Peggy Sue Hilt's sentencing last week, a couple in Jacksonville, Fla., was prepared to board a plane to Manassas and testify on behalf of all the people Hilt hurt when she beat her 2-year-old adopted Russian daughter to death last year.
"We were ready to go over there," said Richard Verne, 40. "We were ready to get on a plane until the very last minute."
The Vernes are among many couples across the nation who sent letters and talked to prosecutors, asking how they could help ensure Hilt serves the severest of sentences and how they could show the court that she had destroyed not only her family but also the hopes of theirs.
Just weeks after Nina Hilt was murdered, the Vernes were in Russia, where a judge told them they could not take home two young girls they had planned to adopt. Instead, their adoption case was put on hold indefinitely.
"It was devastating," said Wanda Verne, 49, who said the couple had gotten to know the girls: "They called us Mama and Papa."
"They opened their arms every time we came to see them," her husband said.
And so it was with the image of the children left behind that an international community awaited Hill's sentencing Thursday. If the sentence was lenient, many feared that Russia would respond by further restricting adoptions. After the death of Nina -- the 14th Russian child killed by an adopted American parent since the 1990s -- the Russian government initially threatened to put a moratorium on all adoptions.
"This case has more ramifications than, I think, most of them," Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul B. Ebert (D) told Circuit Court Judge William D. Hamblen before the sentencing. "The whole adoption process has come somewhat to a halt. . . . Folks that were so excited to have a baby of their own were punished because of what she did."
Hilt, 34, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March, admitting that she had punched, kicked and choked Nina at their Wake Forest, N.C., home July 1 during a rage. The child died a day later in Prince William, where the family was visiting friends.
Hamblen on Thursday sentenced Hilt to 35 years, with 10 of them suspended -- exceeding the guideline of 12 to 21 years.
Hilt's attorney, William Stephens, called the sentence a "little harsh" and said Hilt should have sought help for her many problems, including depression, alcohol addiction and trouble bonding with the child.
Ebert said he was satisfied with the sentence. So, too, were many in the international adoption community.
"It really would have been a slap in the face of the Russians who are concerned about this if they had let her off with a light sentence," said Patrick Mason of the International Adoption Center at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.
He said his office has seen adoptions from Russia slow since Nina's death.
"It's very sad about the children over there waiting, and the families that are here that will love them and will take care of them, that will not be able to do that anytime soon because of cases like that," Mason said.
Thomas Atwood, president of the Alexandria-based National Council for Adoption, said his office hopes the sentence will improve the climate for adoptions between the two countries.
"We hear that the Russians are pleased that the sentence is tough," Atwood said. "It's in line with the type of sentencing that a person would receive in Russia for that kind of a verdict."
Rick Gibson, board president of the Joint Council on International Children's Services in Alexandria, said, "Justice was served.
"I think this case points to the goal for both the U.S. and Russia to set high standards for adoption procedures and to follow them and to have as much transparency as possible," Gibson said. "It's a terrible story, and hopefully with pre-adoptive preparation and family support, this will never happen again."
After Nina's death, officials in both countries called for reforms, including stricter screening of prospective parents, improved pre-adoption training and a reevaluation of independent adoptions, those done through agencies not accredited by Russia. An estimated 700,000 children are in Russian orphanages.
According to the U.S. State Department, Russia is second to China as the most popular country for international adoptions to U.S. families. In 2005, the United States issued 4,639 immigrant visas to Russian orphans, down from 5,865 in 2004.
The Vernes said that the two girls they hope to adopt are now 5 years old and that one has been adopted by a Russian family. They haven't seen either girl for a year. They estimate they have spent about $20,000 on the adoption process.
"The financial investment has not hurt as much as the mental anguish we have suffered because of" Hilt, Richard Verne said.
They haven't tried to adopt from elsewhere, he said, because they feel an obligation to the girls they promised to bring home -- girls who have their pictures. "We already know them," he said.
"I see their little faces in everything I do," Wanda Verne said. "Mother's Day, my girls should have been here."

Peggy Sue Hilt convicted

Finally Peggy Sue Hilt was convicted. The murder of her daughter, Nina Hilt, has delayed our adoption by another year. Here is the article written by the post:

Mother Sentenced to 25 Years
Woman Had Admitted Killing Adopted Russian Daughter

By Theresa Vargas
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, May 26, 2006
For the murder of her 2-year-old adopted Russian daughter, Peggy Sue Hilt will serve 25 years in jail, under a sentence imposed yesterday by a Prince William County judge.
"I think your conduct, at its core, is inexplicable, completely inexplicable," Circuit Court Judge William D. Hamblen said. "The child's death was not the product of a single act, a single blow. Her injuries were the result of a course of conduct over an extended period of time."
And only Hilt, he added, knows the extent of it.
Hilt, 34, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March after telling police that she punched, kicked and choked Nina Hilt at their Wake Forest, N.C., home during a rage in July. The child died a day later in Prince William, where the family was visiting friends.
"I hurt Nina," Hilt told authorities at the time. "I choked her, and I hit her and hit her."
The Prince William case has affected other U.S. families hoping to adopt. Russian officials initially called for a moratorium on U.S. adoptions after the death of Nina, who was the 14th adopted Russian child killed in the United States. Several Russian journalists were at the courthouse yesterday.
As Hilt stood in the courtroom awaiting her sentence, she struggled to talk. When asked whether she had anything to say, she paused for several minutes and then uttered, in a barely audible voice, "I'm sorry doesn't even come close . . . " before breaking into a mumble.
"She prepared to make a statement," her attorney, William Stephens, said afterward. "The emotion of the event would not allow her to do it."
Stephens described Hilt in court as a woman without a criminal record who was besieged with many issues when she killed Nina, including depression, an addiction to alcohol that she hid from her husband and problems bonding with the child. A medical evaluation found that Hilt was not likely to kill again.
"She needed help," he said.
But Prince William Commonwealth's Attorney Paul B. Ebert told the court, "Some people you just can't help."
He recited Nina's injuries: bruises on her face, on her rib cage, on her small intestine, her skull, and so on. Before dying of blunt trauma to the abdomen, the child survived for a day, he said.
"It took a long time to kill the child," Ebert said, adding that it was "a horrible, horrible case."
Ebert also reminded the court of the international ramifications of the case -- that Nina's death had created a strain between the Russian government and U.S. couples hoping to adopt.
Ebert said the court received many letters from parents across the nation saying that their adoptions have been affected by the Hilt case.
"Most of them were pretty heartbroken about it," he said. "And, for right or wrong, they blame Mrs. Hilt."
One such couple is Richard and Wanda Verne, of Jacksonville, Fla.
They were in the process of adopting two 3-year-old girls from the same region as Nina when her death stopped the proceedings indefinitely. When they learned that Hilt was sentenced to 35 years, with 10 of those years suspended -- a sentence that exceeds the guideline of 12 to 21 years -- they said the punishment should have been harsher.
"She was selfish not to get help," said Wanda Verne.
They last saw the girls they planned to adopt just weeks after Hilt's death. The girls are now 5, and the Vernes said they still don't have a court date to finalize the adoption.
"For two years, they have been told mama and papa will come to get them someday," Wanda Verne said. "I'm sure they are wondering where we are."
Hilt had adopted another girl, Nataliya, from Ukraine. There were no signs that the child had been abused, police said. Stephens said yesterday that she is staying with her adoptive father's family.

Heartbreak in our Journey

We received news last week that our sweet little Pixie is no longer available for adoption. A family member has taken her home. E-mail from our facilitator states: "As you know in the light of the investigation of the child death case the general prosecutor's office demanded that Irkutsk authorities question all papers and talk to all relatives of the children offered for adoption. As a result we lost very many children for our adoptive parents. The investigation is still under way, two baby home directors in Irkutsk were forced to leave."
At this time we know that at least 30 children have been reclaimed by family members in the last 2 months. In the meantime the judge continues to not set court dates for anyone. We have heard that the judge has told the guardian committees that they must do absolutely everything they can do to have these children reclaimed by families or adopted by Russians.
In the five years that Pixie was in the orphanage, not one family member visited her, every year until this year they have signed away all rights to her; she has an older brother and sister in the orphanage whose rights have not been given up, but they were not reclaimed. This judge has made it her personal responsibility to make sure the children of Irkutsk are not adoptable.
I can not say that this is not a better situation for our Pixie, to live with biological family, but this is what we know about her family. Her mother walked off and left her at the hospital the day she was born, never visiting her. She lives in a one room apartment with a man who is not Pixie's father and his 2 teenage sons. Her grandparents, an aunt, uncle and 2 cousins live in a 2 room shack without running water and indoor plumbing and have no visible means of income. We have learned that some families are being paid a monthly stipend if they take the children home, much like our own foster care system.
My heart is broken in two. We have been bonding with these two children for two years, have decorated their room, bought them toys and cloths and quite honestly it feels like a death. I grieve daily, I see their faces in everything I do. We do intend to go ahead and continue to await a court date for Alyssa, but quite honestly do not believe she will be available much longer. In my heart of heart I have to believe God does have a purpose in this, but I can't understand how there could be purpose in us be strung along for 2 years, for us to even meet these children, for Pixie to go back to poverty stricken, alcoholic families. I feel selfish, but all I have done for the last two years is prepare to be their mother. And now I'm lost.

Praise You In This Storm

I was sure by now,
God,That You would have reached down,
And wiped our tears away,
Stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say "Amen",
and it's still raining.

As the thunder rolls,
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
"I'm with you."
And as Your mercy falls,
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away.

I'll praise You in this storm,
And I will lift my hands,
For You are who You are,
No matter where I am.
Every tear I've cried,
You hold in Your hand,
You never left my side,
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm.

I remember when
I stumbled in the wind,
You heard my cry to you,
and raised me up again.
My strength is almost gone;
How can I carry on,
If I can't find You?

As the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain,
"I'm with you."
And as Your mercy falls,
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives,
And takes away

I lift my eyes unto the hills;
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
The Maker of heaven and earth.

Today we share the pain

Today we share the pain of friends we have never met. Friends with whom we have shared stories and pictures, joy and tears. Friends who had the same goal we have, to bring children home from Irkutsk. Today our friends received the news that the children they were waiting for are no longer in the orphanage, they have been reclaimed by family. One of our biggest fears. We share their pain, we cry with them, we pray that God give them peace. We pray for all of the families waiting for their children. We pray for the children waiting for their families. We pray for understanding that God knows what is best.

Praying Through Adoption

I found this e-book online called Praying Through Adoption. I have been feeling that my prayers are so redundant and this book has helped so much with getting on track. One of the chapters is Spiritual Warfare Against Adoption it includes this prayer: "Lord, the enemy seeks to discourage us from resting in Your will. We are not surprised by his schemes to prevent this child from becoming part of our Christian family. He is the father of lies. However, You can expose his lies and confusion for You are the Light of the world. We look to You for truth, protection and safety from the enemy. Dress us for battle and give us endurance to run the race set before us."

Adoption Poem

Longing for a child to love,
I'd wish upon the stars above.
In my heart I always knew,
A part of me was meant for you.

I think how happy we will be,
Once I adopt you,& you adopt me.

I dream of all the joy you'll bring,
Imagining even the littlest things.
The way it will feel to hold you tight
& tuck you in every night.

The drawings on the refrigerator door
& childhhod toys across the floor,
The favorite stories read again & again
& hours of fun with make believe frinds.

The day you took my outstretched hand
A journey ended but our love began.
Still mesmerized by your sweet face
Still warmed inside by our first embrace.

I promised to give you a happy home
& a loving family all your own.
A house you've now made complete
with laughter,smiles & tiny feet.

A parent is one who guides the way
Know I will be there every day
Rest easy as each night you sleep
A lifetime of love is yours to keep

Longing for a child to love
I'd wish apon the stars above.
In my heart I always knew
A part of me belonged to you.

Irkutsk French website

This was posted on yahoo independent adoption group by a French lady. Maybe it will do some good:

Dear listmates,
The 88 French families who have been waiting for up to 24 months for a court date in Irkoutsk have set a website where people can support their petition: www.adoption-irkoutsk.org
It suffices to sign online and indicate an email address, then you will receive a short email which reconnects you to the webpage to validate your signature (no names and adresses requested)

And click around on the site, there is one page called "chambres d'enfants": kids roooms, the families have sent the pictures of the empty children's room waiting for their children stuck in Irkoutsk. IT is really moving... it must be hard to be waiting for your child for such a long time.
Some families have established contact with American families who were in Irkoutsk around the same time. Solidarity is over the seas...
Any of you feel solidarity with the families in wait for up to 2 years after having met their children? Please sign the petition and visit the page?

good news/bad news

It seems we are continually taking one step forward, only to turn around and take one or two steps back. The last month has mostly been bad news and there appears to be no end in site.
bad news - we heard our wonderful friend and coordinator was thrown out of the judges court for talking back to the judge and told never to come back. Poor guy, his heart is so big and he loves the children so much. This doesn't hurt our case as he could no longer represent us anyway, we just feel so bad for him.
bad news -We had another agency turn us down as they do not want to go into our region either.
good news-We heard that a facilitator filed a complaint against the judge and there would be a meeting with authorities.
bad news- the judge is going on vacation for the month of March. Imagine being on the job only 6 months and getting a whole months vacation.
more bad news - we heard in detail the problems the facilitators are having in Irkutsk.
As it stands we have absolutely no idea if or even when we will be able to bring the girls home. Everyday is a test of our faith and an emotional roller coaster. All we can do is pray because I can't believe it would be God's will for the hundreds of children in Irkutsk to grow up in these orphanages.

Our Christmas Party

Last weekend we had our annual White Elephant Christmas party. Lots of friends, lots of laughs, lots of good food. Can't believe I couldn't find the camera.
While decorating the tree I kept thinking this year I should have been decorating the tree for our babies. Next year!!!

Maybe we can get back on track now

I just got an email back from Alex about Birth parents in court.

This is what he says.
It appears to be true - the judge did not ask the birth family members to come to the court hearing last week but she mentioned she would do it in future. I think she would do it several times to make sure consent to adoptions were real and before she starts trusting guardian committees and social workers. The previous judge did the same in the first couple of years.

It also sounds like Zoya met with Olga had an great meeting and decided to fly to Irkutsk with Olga the same day to meet Marina. Alex and Marina had a meeting with her and it sounds like it went really well. Now we have to wait until Zoya contacts Maps and hopefully this will all be done soon.

Latest from Irkutsk Yahoo forum

Here is latest info from Irkutsk Yahoo forum.

"We heard through our contacts that the Spanish family was successful in court this week (after what were told was a 5 hour hearing) and that apparently two other families (reportedly one from France, the other not sure where from) have court dates within the next week or so. We also learned today that the judge apparently now is requiring that members of the birth family be present in court as witness to the fact that the child could not raised by his biological family."

We pray that this is not a new requirement of the judge. It would take a miracle to get these parents from Bratsk to Irkutsk; plus there is the worry that the mothers may not want their children adopted by Americans.

More options for court, e-mail from Brenda

I have not heard back from MAPS yet but that doesn't mean bad news its just means that either Mercy is still traveling or they are waiting until Zoya makes her trip to Irkutsk to meet personally. I will try to call today again to see if I can find more news.

We do have another angle we are working on too.
We have an exchange student in our church from Hungary. His Name is Peter. We found out that his Grandmother is very high politically in Russia and his Aunt is very wealthy and hangs out and gives lots of money to the political scene in Russia.
The Grandmother says that since independent adoptions are still legal in Russia at this point that it is ridiculous that this judge will not hear these cases and wants to try to help us if she can. Alex is very agreeable to this and they plan to have a phone conversation on Friday morning. She says she will do everything in her power to move this woman to hear independent cases.
Again I can't promise you anything at this point but we are not sitting back and doing nothing either. God has been amazing this past week and we are asking for specific prayers for this as most judges in Russia will back down to anything political and this woman may go straight to the Ministry of education. She wants to call the Judge herself but we are letting Alex tell her what she needs to do since we don't want in anyway to jeopardize anyone. Alex knows best in this situation but I wanted you all to pray and to let other know to pray specifically for this woman to be able to do something.
We are not giving up on MAPs or any other avenue, but we feel this could be a good chance to get things moving even faster for everyone that is stuck and independent. Adoptions international's accredited agency is without accreditation too now and this could even help them. That is all that matters is that the children come home to you all. I will keep you posted for any news. We have asked Alex to contact us after the phone call to see what was said and what will be done.

500 Days

Time and Date.com I came across this website that calculates number of days between dates, so I plugged in the date we met the girls and today's date.

5OO Days. That is how long it has been. I am miserable.

E-mails from Brenda

Hi everyone!
Maps and I had a great conversation yesterday. She told me that Irkutsk is one of her favorite places in Russia! She also told me that Maps is looking to break into new regions and maybe Irkutsk could be that region. I hope that is a good sign.

Today they are planning on calling Irkutsk and the adoption center to get more info from Olga (she loves Alex's team so that should not be a problem and then calling Natasha (who Alex has prepped about the program) She said she would see about calling today or that we should know something in a day or two. She promised she would not keep us hanging. Please, please pray that this happens! It would be better for all of us now and in the long run!!! I want what is best for all of you and this would also shorten the trip too. I know that would be better for everyone!!

AND

Things are sounding very good with maps!!!!!!!!!!
They talked with Ministry of education today and they were very happy with that conversation. I had to fill out a bunch of questions today and get them back to her on fees and such and she is still working on getting a hold of Natasha. It may also be a woman named Marina. Did you happen to meet a Marina? Maps doesn't seem to care who it is at this point. I am sure you are wondering but it won't be able to be Sergei as the representative, however I have been assured he will still be working on the case.
I have explained to them about you and Richard and the fees you had to pay because of the July trip when court was cancelled. She seemed very moved by this story and I am really hoping that we can work something special out for you guys.

I wish I knew an end date when this would all be done but things seem to be going really well with them at this point.
